Mask Types

As we noted earlier, risks from common, household indoor-pollution sources are far more serious than rare biological threats, such as anthrax or the bird flu. Household risks become even more of an issue if you are actively renovating your home. The masks below, when properly used, can help protect you from most of these hazards.

Common, disposable mask

This mask filters pollen, dust, grass and other non-toxic particles. It won't collapse when wet from use (breath moisture) or in high-humidity areas.


Half-face mask

This mask is NIOSH-approved to be used against: anthrax, certain organic vapors, clorine, hydrogen chloride, chlorine dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide ammonia/methylamine, formaldehyde or hydrogen fluoride. OSHA regulations require that gas-proof goggles must be worn with half face-piece respirators (gas masks) when used against formaldehyde and other gases and/or vapors. The model above is the 3M 5206 Half-Face Respirator Gas Mask.


Half-face mask (organic vapor)

When this mask is properly fitted on to your face, it helps provide respiratory protection from certain organic vapors (Volatile Organic Compounds) and particulates at concentrations up to 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). Don't use this mask in environments that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). NIOSH approved this mask against certain organic vapors and particulates.
